Pierre Werner Lecture

In 2003, to mark the celebrations of its 5th anniversary, the BCL organised the first Pierre Werner Lecture.

This lecture is a way of paying tribute to Pierre Werner, to a man who devoted his life to serving both his country and Europe and whose passionate interest in monetary matters, coupled with his idealism, contributed decisively to the progressive shaping of a monetary union and its single currency today shared by 16 countries.

As a member of its Council, Pierre Werner contributed actively to the inception of the Central Bank of Luxembourg as a link in the European System of Central Banks which he already outlined in his seminal report 30 years ago.

The Pierre Werner Lecture aims at being a regional forum focusing on subjects relating to central banking issues. Whereas in a first stage it will take form of a traditional lecture, the aim is that it should develop in the medium term into a seminar in cooperation with research institutes and universities.

Thus, on 21 October 2003, Mr. Hans Tietmeyer, former President of the Bundesbank, held a speech entitled "From the Werner report to the euro".

On 26 October 2004, Baron Alexandre Lamfalussy, former Director General of the European Monetary Institute, spoke about "Central Banks and Financial Stability".

In 2005, “Fiscal Policy in the Monetary Union? was the subject chosen by Mr. Jacques de Larosière, former Governor of the Banque de France.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Otmar Issing, former member of the Board of the European Central Bank, focused his speech in October 2006 on “Politik und Politkerverhalten: Von den Schwierigkeiten einer langfristigen Orientierung der Politk?.

On 12 November 2008, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the BCL, Mr. Jürgen Stark, Member of the Executive Board, European Central Bank, Mr. Akinari Horii, Assistant Governor of the Bank of Japan, Mr. Donald L. Kohn, Vice Chairman, Federal Reserve Board of Governors, spoke about “Growth and Productivity of the Financial Sector: Challenges for Monetary Policy?.
