This new golden collector coin in proof quality belongs to the new series “Cultural History of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg".
The mask of Hellange was found in March 1853 in one of the ancient cremation graves (1st century AD), which were discovered during forestry work. This bronze mask (20x15x10 cm), representing a young man’s face, formed the visor of an iron helmet belonging to a Roman horseman. In view of its refined workmanship the mask must have been used for parade purposes.
The reverse of the coin shows a representation of the parade mask of a Roman officer, a map of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the face value "10 €".
The obverse bears the effigy of HRH the Grand Duke, looking to the right. It is the work of the Luxembourg artist Mrs. Yvette Gastauer-Claire. It also bears the indication “Lëtzebuerg“ and the year “2004". The coin was minted by the “Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg".
Minted in “proof" quality, the coin has a smooth edge and a diameter of 16 mm, weighs 3,12 gr, and has a fineness of 0,999 gold and a weight of fine metal of 1/10 OZ.
The coin is legal tender in Luxembourg with its nominal value set at 10 EUR.
