Conditions for the presentation of monetary signs that are counterfeited or deemed to be counterfeited

According to the penal code, the putting back into circulation of counterfeit banknotes or coins or the attempt to do so may carry a penalty as soon as these banknotes and coins have been identified as counterfeits.

The counterfeited banknotes and coins may be handed over either at each police station or at the Numismatic Shop of the Banque centrale du Luxembourg.

In case counterfeits are handed over at the central bank, a receipt is delivered.

The handing over of counterfeits may only be done from Monday to Friday from 10h30 to 16h00 at the following address:

The handing over counterfeited banknotes and coins by financial institutions, cash in transit companies and other professional cash handlers is defined by the circular BCL 2003/179.
