Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 815 055 million euros on 31 December 2019, compared to 835 963 million euros on 30 November 2019, a decrease of 2.5%. Between the months of December 2018 and December 2019, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 6.0%.

Net interbank lending, that is to say the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 1 671 million (1.0%) to reach 161 555 million euros at the end of December 2019.

 

Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 434 million euros, or 0.4%, between November 2019 and December 2019. Between December 2018 and December 2019, these loans increased by 6 929 million euros (7.6%).

The progression of loans to resident non-bank customers was largely attributable to its three main components. Indeed, between December 2018 and December 2019, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) rose by 659 million euros (2.4%), loans for house purchases by 2 572 million euros (8.4%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) by 3 654 million euros (13.9%).

 

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector decreased by 5 709 million euros or 2.2% between 30 November 2019 and 31 December 2019. On an annual basis, these deposits increased by 17 851 million euros, or 7.5%.

Between December 2018 and December 2019, OFI deposits (which had a share of 68.9% as at 31 December 2019 and comprised deposits made by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 13 928 million euros (8.6%) and household deposits by 2 346 million euros (6.0%). Resident NFC deposits decreased by 503 million euros (2.9%).
