05.04.2019

The finals and award ceremony of the Eurosystem’s secondary school competition “Generation €uro Students’ Award” were organised on Thursday 4 April at the BCL. This event concluded Luxembourg’s 2018-2019 contest.

The “Generation €uro Students’ Award” competition was created in 2011 and has been organised in Luxembourg since 2013. The competition targets secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19, particularly those taking economics classes. Its aim is to promote a better understanding of the role and functioning of the Eurosystem, which is composed of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks of the euro area. The competition is co-organised by the ECB and a dozen national central banks in participating countries, including the BCL in Luxembourg.

In the 2018-2019 contest, 31 teams participated in the first round last October, by responding to a 30-question online quiz on the Eurosystem and its monetary policy. Out of these 31 teams, 12 were selected for the second round in January, which consisted in making a monetary policy decision and providing a written explanation of the reasoning underlying this decision. The three best teams from the second round were invited to the finals on 4 April, to present a new monetary policy decision before a jury of experts from the BCL and to answer questions from the jury.

The following secondary schools took part in the 2018-2019 competition: Athénée de Luxembourg, St George’s International School, International School of Luxembourg, Lycée Aline Mayrisch, Lycée Hubert Clément, Lycée technique de Lallange and Sportlycée.

The following teams reached the finals:

  • First place - Team “One Direction” from Athénée de Luxembourg, composed of Serena BOUKELMOUN, Carl’Amedeo CZARNOCKI LUCHESCHI, Brian LACKNER, Elisabeth MARTIN, Egan PAQUAY (teacher: Christophe BAUSTERT);

  • Second place - Team “The Lion Kings” from Lycée Hubert Clément, composed of Daniel CARVALHO MARQUES PAIVA, Vitoria FERNANDES ANTUNES DIAS, Graciette MARQUES, Anida SPAHIJA (teacher: Carlo KLEIN);

After the teams’ presentations and the jury’s deliberation, Mr. Gaston Reinesch, Governor of the BCL and member of the Governing Council of the ECB, opened the award ceremony.

In his address, Mr. Reinesch expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the competition: “Monetary policy has a strong impact on the everyday life of citizens in the euro area. It is therefore essential that young people, as future citizens, be optimally informed about its mechanisms. I would like to congratulate all of you for your efforts and thank your teachers for their support throughout the three stages of the competition.”

This year’s winning team, “One Direction”, will travel to Frankfurt on 7 and 8 May for the European award ceremony, where ECB President Mario Draghi will present each winning national team with a certificate.
