Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 968 804 million euros on 31 August 2025, compared to 976 349 million euros on 31 July 2025, a decrease of 0.77%.

This decrease is mainly due to the monthly decrease of loans on banks and deposit-taking corporations on the asset side and on the decrease of deposits to this same sector on the liabilities side. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 2.86%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 10 990 million euros (4.93%) to reach 211 901 million euros at the end of August 2025.

 

Loans to resident non-bank customers decreased by 1 788 million euros, or 1.53%, between July 2025 and August 2025. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 1 587 million euros, or 1.4%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 1 578 million euros (or 6.20%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 207 million euros 2.95% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 2 839 million euros (or 7.26%).

 

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 12 016 million euros, or 3.85%, between July 2025 and August 2025. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 9 757 million euros, or 3.36%.

Between August 2024 and August 2025, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.46% as at 31 August 2025 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 6 148 million euros (or 3.13%) and household deposits progressed by 1 810 million euros (or 3.87%). NFC deposits increased by 1 577 million euros (or 6.69%) and deposits from the other sectors1 progressed by 222 million euros (or 0.94%).
