Evolution of credit institutions' balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 007 183 million euros on 31 January 2026, compared to 981 560 million euros on 31 December 2025, an increase of 2.61%.
On the assets side, it is mostly due to the monthly increase of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 3.88%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 12 511 million euros, or 5.82%, to reach 227 612 million euros at the end of January 2026.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 986 million euros, or 0.83%, between December 2025 and January 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 4 704 million euros, or 4.10%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 772 million euros (or 3.28%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 227 million euros 2.96% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 4 019 million euros (or 9.35%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 11 742 million euros, or 3.88%, between December 2025 and January 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 16 411 million euros, or 5.51%.

Between January 2025 and January 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 68% as at 31 January 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 17 345 million euros (or 8.85%) and household deposits progressed by 2 538 million euros (or 5.34%). NFC deposits decreased by 3 210 million euros (or 12%) and deposits from the other sectors1 decreased by 262 million euros (or 0.95%).
