Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 026 980 million euros on 31 March 2026, compared to 1 000 949 million euros on 28 February 2026, an increase of 2.60%. 

On the assets side, this increase is due mostly to the monthly increase of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 4.06%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 13 655 million euros, or 6.14%, to reach 236 077 million euros at the end of March 2026. 

Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 1 261 million euros, or 1.05%, between February 2026 and March 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 5 654 million euros, or 4.88%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) progressed by 1 370 million euros (or 6.27%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 167 million euros 2.80% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 2 789 million euros (or 6.12%). 

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 14 204 million euros, or 4.51%, between February 2026 and March 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 19 351 million euros, or 6.25%.

Between March 2025 and March 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 68.6% as at 31 March 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 17 126 million euros (or 8.21%) and household deposits progressed by 2 776 million euros (or 5.8%). NFC deposits decreased by 3 344 million euros (or 12.38%) and deposits from the other sectors1 progressed by 2 793 million euros (or 10.61%).
