Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 050 932 million euros on 30 June 2026, compared to 1 033 311 million euros on 31 May 2026, an increase of 1.71%. 

On the assets side, this decrease is due mostly to the monthly increase of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from other banks and deposit-taking corporations and to deposits from other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 6.76%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 4 216 million euros, or 1.93%, to reach 223 081 million euros at the end of June 2026. 

Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 2 322 million euros, or 1.91%, between May 2026 and June 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 8 132 million euros, or 7.02%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 553 million euros (or 2.40%), loans for house purchases increased by 830 million euros (or 1.96%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 7 399 million euros (or 17%). 

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 8 645 million euros, or 2.68%, between May 2026 and June 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 19 928 million euros, or 6.41%.

Between June 2025 and June 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 68.9% as at 30 June 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 16 804 million euros (or 7.95%) and household deposits progressed by 1 822 million euros (or 3.73%). NFC deposits decreased by 2 808 million euros (or 10.66%) and deposits from the other sectors1 progressed by 4 110 million euros (or 16.76%).
