International investment position at the end of March 2021

Compared to the last quarter of 2020, Luxembourg’s external financial assets increased by 485 billion euros to reach 11 370 billion euros at the end of the first quarter of 2021. External financial liabilities increased by 482 billion euros and reached 11 336 billion euros at the end of March 2021. These increases are largely explained by positive revaluation effects. Luxembourg’s net international investment position increased by 3 billion euros and reached 34 billion euros at the end of March 2021, as the increases affected external financial assets more than liabilities. 

In the various components of the net external position, the net asset position in direct investments increased by 23 billion to reach 715 billion euros at the end of March 2021. The net asset position in the other investments (deposits and traditional credits, trade credits, other receivables or payables) decreased by 22 billion euros and reached 193 billion euros. The structural net liability position in the portfolio investments was reduced by 10 billion euros and reached 887 billion euros at the end of March 2021. 

The amount outstanding in direct investments assets reached up 4 699 billion euros at the end of March 2021, having undergone positive revaluation effects (92 billion euros). The amount outstanding in direct investments liabilities increased by 69 billion euros reaching up 3 984 billion euros at the end of March 2021. Positive revaluations effects (69 billion euros) also triggered the later increase. 

The amount outstanding in portfolio investments assets reached up 5 101 billion euros at the end of March 2021, after having increased by 317 billion euros which resulted from positive revaluation effects (207 billion euros), as well as from positive transactions (109 billion euros). The amount outstanding in portfolio investments liabilities reached up 5 989 billion euros at the end of March 2021, after having increased by 307 billion euros which resulted from large revaluation effects (199 billion euros), as well as from positive transactions (109 billion euros). 

For other investments, the amount outstanding in assets reached up 1 402 billion euros at the end of March 2021, after having increased by 44 billion euros which resulted from positive transactions (20 billion euros), as well as positive changes in exchange rates. The amount outstanding in liabilities increased by 65 billion euros, up to 1 209 billion euros at the end of March 2021.
