Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 986 949 million euros on 31 March 2025, compared to 980 839 million euros on 28 February 2025, an increase of 0.62%.

 

On the assets side, this decrease is due mostly to the monthly increase of securities holdings and loans towards other sectors. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from the other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 3.10%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 7 736 million euros, or 3.22%, to reach 248 069 million euros at the end of March 2025.

 

Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 1 269 million euros, or 1.11%, between February 2025 and March 2025. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 1 779 million euros, or 1.56%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 4 222 million euros (or 15.28%), loans for house purchases increased by 617 million euros (or 1.5%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 7 008 million euros (or 18.98%).

 

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 7 753 million euros, or 2.57%, between February 2025 and March 2025. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 37 175 million euros, or 13.63%.

Between March 2024 and March 2025, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.4% as at 31 March 2025 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 29 705 million euros (or 16.59%) and household deposits progressed by 1 888 million euros (or 4.11%). NFC deposits increased by 3 259 million euros (or 13.73%) and deposits from the other sectors[1]  progressed by 2 323 million euros (or 9.68%).
