International investment position at the second quarter of 2025
Compared to the first quarter of 2025, Luxembourg’s external financial assets decreased by 252.7 billion euros, reaching 12 644 billion euros at the end of the second quarter of 2025. External financial liabilities decreased similarly, reaching 12 611 billion euros for this period. Luxembourg’s international investment position is amounted to 33 billion euros at the end of June 2025.
The outstanding amount in direct investments assets and liabilities decreased and reached respectively 4 693 billion euros and 3 621 billion euros. These results are very much related to negative price and exchange rate effects as well as negative transactions.
Driven by the evolution in financial markets, the outstanding amount in portfolio investments assets reached 6 072 billion euros, i.e. an increase of 38.2 billion euros, mainly associated with 71 billion euros of investments, the rest due to negative revaluation and price effects (-33 billion euros). Likewise, the amount outstanding in portfolio investments liabilities reached 7395 billion euros at the end of June 2025, which represents an increase of 30.5 billion euros. This increase is mainly due to 46 billion euros of positive transactions partially offset by -16 billion euros of negative price and change effects.
Lastly, the outstanding amount in assets regarding other investments reached 1 598 billion euros at the end of June 2025, which corresponds to a slight decrease compared to the previous quarter. The amount outstanding in liabilities on other investments also slightly decreased vis-à-vis the previous quarter (17.1 billion euros), reaching 1 347 billion euros at the end of the second quarter of 2025.
