Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 976 349 million euros on 31 July 2025, compared to 984 310 million euros on 30 June 2025, a decrease of 0.81%.
This increase is mainly due to the monthly decrease of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to a mix of deposits from other sectors, securities issued and other liabilities. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 2.76%.
Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 16 749 million euros, or 6.99%, to reach 222 892 million euros at the end of July 2025.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 546 million euros, or 0.47%, between June 2025 and July 2025. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 3 485 million euros, or 3.09%.
On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 3 048 million euros (or 11.68%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 215 million euros (or 2.96%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 6 100 million euros (or 16.04%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 7 million euros between June 2025 and July 2025. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 21 244 million euros, or 7.34%.
Between July 2024 and July 2025, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.4% as at 31 July 2025 and comprised of deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 15 768 million euros (or 8.13%) and household deposits progressed by 1 961 million euros (or 4.21%). NFC deposits increased by 2 364 million euros (or 9.8%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 1 152 million euros (or 4.61%).
