Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 980 784 million euros on 30 September 2025, compared to 968 804 million euros on 31 August 2025, an increase of 1.24%.

On the assets side, this increase is due mostly to the monthly increase of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from the other sectors. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 2.02%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 4 054 million euros, or 1.91%, to reach 215 955 million euros at the end of September 2025.

Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 1 987 million euros, or 1.73%, between August 2025 and September 2025. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 3 680 million euros, or 3.25%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 2 017 million euros (or 7.89%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 446 million euros 3.52% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 5 179 million euros (or 13.37%).

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 5 414 million euros, or 1.81%, between August 2025 and September 2025. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 19 111 million euros, or 6.68%.

Between September 2024 and September 2025, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 68.3% as at 30 septembre 2025 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 16 255 million euros (or 8.45%) and household deposits progressed by 2 286 million euros (or 4.93%). NFC deposits decreased by 870 million euros (or 3.71%) and deposits from the other sectors1 progressed by 1 439 million euros (or 5.98%).
