Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 036 875 million euros on 30 April 2026, compared to 1 026 979 million euros on 31 March 2026, an increase of 0.96%.
On the assets side, this is due mostly to the monthly increase of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to deposits from banks and deposit-taking corporations. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 5.34%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 9 061 million euros, or 3.84%, to reach 227 016 million euros at the end of April 2026.
Loans to resident non-bank customers decreased by 231 million euros, or 0.19%, between March 2026 and April 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 6 504 million euros, or 5.66%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) progressed by 318 million euros (or 1.43%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 198 million euros (or 2.87%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 4 758 million euros (or 10.84%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have progressed by 3 131 million euros, or 0.95%, between March 2026 and April 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 20 513 million euros, or 6.58%.

Between April 2025 and April 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.2% as at 30 April 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 12 304 million euros (or 5.84%) and household deposits progressed by 2 858 million euros (or 5.94%). NFC deposits increased by 1 640 million euros (or 6.14%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 3 711 million euros (or 14.32%).
