Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 033 311 million euros on 31 May 2026, compared to 1 036 875 million euros on 30 April 2026, a decrease of 0.34%.
On the assets side, this decrease is due mostly to the monthly decrease of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, the decrease is due to deposits from other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 6.77%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 8 152 million euros, or 3.59%, to reach 218 864 million euros at the end of May 2026.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 287 million euros, or 0.24%, between April 2026 and May 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 7 569 million euros, or 6.63%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) progressed by 250 million euros (or 1.13%), loans for house purchases increased by 1 116 million euros 2.67% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 5 824 million euros (or 13.48%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 9 805 million euros, or 2.95%, between April 2026 and May 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 14 473 million euros, or 4.70%.

Between May 2025 and May 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 68% as at 31 May 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 11 826 million euros (or 5.7%) and household deposits progressed by 2 468 million euros (or 5.1%). NFC deposits decreased by 3 780 million euros (or 14%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 3 959 million euros (or 15.87%).
