Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 034 980 million euros on 31 July 2026, compared to 1 050 934 million euros on 30 June 2026, a decrease of 1.52%.
This evolution is primarily attributable to the regression of receivables from other banks and deposit institutions. On the liability side, it results from a decrease in commitments to other sectors, as well as a reduction in commitments to banks and deposit institutions. On an annual basis, the total balance sheets of credit institutions have increased by 5.83 %.
Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 9 291 million euros, or 4.16%, to reach 213 790 million euros at the end of July 2026.
Loans to resident non-bank customers decreased by 1 618 million euros, or 1.3%, between June 2026 and July 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 5 581 million euros, or 4.78%.
On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 160 million euros (or 0.7%), loans for house purchases increased by 906 million euros 2.14% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 4 347 million euros (or 9.69%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 1 701 million euros, or 0.51%, between June 2026 and July 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 17 302 million euros, or 5.55%.
Between July 2025 and July 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 68.05% as at 31 July 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 13 302 million euros (or 6.31%) and household deposits progressed by 2 205 million euros (or 4.54%). NFC deposits decreased by 2 205 million euros (or 8.32%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 4 000 million euros (or 15.32%).
