Evolution of credit institutions’ balance sheet

The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 1 031 495 million euros on 31 August 2026, compared to 1 034 980 million euros on 31 July 2026, a decrease of 0.34%.

This change is mainly due to the decrease in claims on other banks and deposit-taking institutions on the assets side, and to the decrease in liabilities to other banks and deposit-taking institutions as well as to other sectors on the liabilities side. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet increased by 6.47%.

Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, decreased by 6 623 million euros, or 3.10%, to reach 207 167 million euros at the end of August 2026. 

Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 903 million euros, or 0.74%, between July 2026 and August 2026. Over twelve months, these loans have increased by 8 273 million euros, or 7.19%.

On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 1 509 million euros (or 6.31%), loans for house purchases increased by 919 million euros 2.18% and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) increased by 8 420 million euros (or 20.07%). 

With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector have retracted by 8 290 million euros, or 2.52%, between July 2026 and August 2026. Over twelve months, these deposits increased by 21 030 million euros, or 7.01%.

Between August 2025 and August 2026, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 67.8% as at 31 August 2026 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) increased by 15 424 million euros (or 7.62%) and household deposits progressed by 2 107 million euros (or 4.33%). NFC deposits decreased by 818 million euros (or 3.25%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] progressed by 4 317 million euros (or 18.12%).
